Fernandes Strategic Leadership Award

Fernandes PhotoThe Academy recognized John Fernandes, CEO of AACSB International, at its Spring meeting in New Orleans, 2012, through the first Fernandes Strategic Leadership Award. During the last decade, Fernandes has driven an unprecedented growth in quality, accountability, and continuous improvement in universities around the world. In recognition of his extraordinary leadership, the Academy created this award in his honor. The award, called the John J. Fernandes Strategic Leadership Award, will be presented periodically to a senior academic leader who evidences great leadership.

Jan WilliamsIn March, 2014, at the Academy meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, we recognized the extraordinary leadership of Dr. Jan Williams, Dean and Professor Emereitis of the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Williams served Tennessee from 1977 through 2013.  He received a BS degree from George Peabody College, now Vanderbilt University, an MBA from Baylor University, and a PhD from the University of Arkansas.  Prior to UT, he served on the faculties at the University of Georgia and Texas Tech University.  He is the former head of the Department of Accounting and Information Management at UT. He is a CPA in Tennessee and Arkansas. He is the co-author of three books and has published over 70 articles and other publications on issues of corporate financial reporting and accounting education.

Dr. Williams has been extensively involved in professional accounting and business organizations.  He served as Vice-President for Education and as President of the American Accounting Association, National President of Beta Alpha Psi, Vice-President of the Tennessee Society of CPAs, and has been actively involved in several capacities with the American Institute of CPAs.  He is Past Chair of the Board of Directors of AACSB International. He continues to be involved in a number of major initiatives with AACSB, including service on accreditation peer review teams and chair of the current CEO search committee. His current professional activities include membership on the Pathways Commission and serving as co-chair of one of its implementation task forces.
